Book review: Witch- A Personal Journey by Fiona HorneBy Dylan Masson
Finally, a voice from Down Under! And what a voice! For those of you unfamiliar with Fiona Horne, I'll offer a little background. Rock goddess, journalist, author, and very public Witch, Fiona Horne offers a positive image of the Craft to her native Australia. Witch- A Personal Journey marks her first foray into the world of book writing. Part autobiography, part introduction to the Craft, part how-to book, Witch draws you into the world of a Witch through her own eyes. What started out as a series of interviews for a magazine article (that was later cancelled for reasons that at the time seemed to be bad luck), was to grow and transform into perhaps one of the best resources for those beginning on the Path of the Witch. Packed with with advice, anecdotes, and spell ideas, Witch is a fantastic portable reference for Witches, but if you think of it as simply another "how to be a Witch" book, you've only scratched the surface of what Witch has to offer. What impressed me most about Witch was Horne's openness when putting her experience in print for the world to see. By exposing her painful experiences, doubts, revelations and triumphs we discover the true nature of the Witch. Seeing the Craft through her eyes we can see that Witchcraft is not simply a religion, but a journey of exploration. Rounding out the book are the interviews with other Witches and even a bit of creative mythology entitled "It Has to be Dark to See the Stars". The interviews were the foundation of the original magazine article, and still serve to expose people to the wide variety of modern Witch lifestyles. We have a good number of visitors from Australia, and prior to reading this book my usual response to most of their questions about the Craft Down Under was something along the lines of "Er, ummm. Have you checked out Stella Australis? (another fantastic site)". That is not to say that this book is strictly for Witches in the Southern Hemisphere. As an exploration of one Witch's experiences, Witch has as much to offer Witches around the world as it does native Australians. Now for the bad news... Witch is currently only available in Australia. One of the things that the WLPA was founded on was the promotion of good educational material. Toward this goal, we are aiding Fiona in letting her publisher know how widespread the interest in her book extends. If you have read Witch and want to lend your support, or if you are interested in seeing it in print in the US (believe me, I am) please send an email! This address is set up specifically for Witch support. If you want to find out more about Fiona, or if you wish to send her a message for any other topic, check out her website! FIONA WILL BE IN AMERICA IN JANUARY - COME ALONG AND MEET HER! She will be talking about Witchcraft, answering your questions, demonstrating Witchcraft rituals and spellcasting and signing copies of WITCH A MAGICKAL JOURNEY. Since posting the reviews of Fiona's books, I have received scores of emails asking where they could get copies. Well, Fiona is finally being published in the U.S. and U.K.. Witch- A Magickal Journey (review coming in the next week or two) is a compilation of her first two Australian releases with additional material added for good measure. She'll be touring in support of Witch- A Magickal Journey, and can't wait to meet everyone who supported her in getting published in the northern hemisphere. More dates are being added every day- check out her website for updates!
